THE Philippines' coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases climbed to 1,165,155 Thursday, May 20, with 6,100 more infections logged by the Department of Health (DOH).

The new infections brought the country's active Covid-19 cases to 51,912 or 4.5 percent of the country's total.

The death toll also rose to 19,641, as 135 more fatalities were reported Thursday.

Recoveries, meanwhile, increased to 1,093,602 with 4,071 more patients reported to have recovered from the disease. This means that 93.9 percent of the patients have survived Covid-19.

The DOH said majority of the patients, or 95.2 percent of the total cases have mild symptoms or are asymptomatic.

The country's bed utilization rate, meanwhile, stood at 59 percent for intensive care unit (ICU) beds, 45 percent for isolation beds, 47 percent for ward beds, and 40 percent for ventilators.

In the National Capital Region (NCR), where cases are seen to be declining, the DOH noted a 59 percent ICU bed utilization rate, 40 percent for isolation beds, 43 percent for ward beds, and 41 percent for ventilators.

The DOH said all laboratories in the country were operational as of May 18, but three labs failed to send data to the Covid-19 Document Repository System.

Based on the data recorded over the last 14 days, the three laboratories that failed to submit data contributed about 0.8 percent of the samples tested and 2.1 percent of all positive results.

The public has been urged to continue to observe social distancing, wear face mask and face shield and practice proper handwashing to further bring down the number of Covid-19 cases in the Philippines. (LMY)
