Joey Canoy suffered another defeat in South Africa after losing to South African Nhlanhla Tyirha on May 22, 2021 (PH time) at the International Convention Centre in East London.
Tyirha got the nod of all three judges with scores of 99-91, 100-91 and 98-92.
Canoy failed on his promise of knocking out Tyirha. He felt that he needed a knockout to win in South Africa.
Canoy first fought in South Africa in 2017. He fought for the vacant International Boxing Organization (IBO) light flyweight title against South African star Hekkie Budler and lost via a seventh round stoppage.
He returned to South Africa in 2018 and settled to a no contest with Simpiwe Konkco in IBO minimumweight title fight.
Canoy returned for a third time in 2019 and lost to South African star Nkosinathi Joyi by unanimous decision in an IBO minimumweight title fight.
Canoy is the third Filipino to lose in South Africa in 2021.
Last April, Christian Araneta and Jerald Paclar lost by unanimous decision to their respective foes in South Africa.

Jonathan Almacen takes on Budler for the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver light flyweight belt at Booysens Hall in Johannesburg.
Almacen is coming off a two-fight winning streak, wherein he beat Roldan Sasan by unanimous decision in his last fight on Nov. 10, 2019.
Budler, on the hand, last fought on Dec. 31, 2018.
He was stopped by a 10th round stoppage in the hands of World Boxing Association (WBA) light flyweight Super champion Hiroto Kyoguchi in Macau.
Almacen is 7-3-2 with two knockouts, while Budler is 32-4 with 10 knockouts. (EKA)
