Almacen loses to ec-world champ in S. Africa

FILIPINO prospect Jonathan Almacen lost his campaign in South Africa after dropping a lopsided unanimous decision in the hands of former world champion Hekkie Budler for the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver light flyweight title on Sunday, May 23, 2021, at the Booysens Hall in Johannesburg.

Budler won convincingly with scores of 118-111, 118-111 and 117-111.

The fight was close early on with both fighters looking to find their rhythm.

In the fifth round, Budler started to gain some ground and had a sizeable lead after eight rounds.

Budler was up ahead 78-75, 77-75 and 78-74 in the judges’ open scorecards.

Almacen had enough rounds to make it competitive but Budler cruised to a victory.

Almacen dropped to 7-4-2 with two knockouts while Budler improved to 33-4 with 10 knockouts.

Almacen is the fourth Filipino fighter to suffer defeat in South Africa in 2021.

Christian Araneta and Jerald Palcar lost by a unanimous decision in their respective fights in April.

Former world-rated light flyweight Joey Canoy just suffered a unanimous decision loss to Nhlanhla Tyirha on Saturday, May 22. (EKA)
