Sangil: My 'journey' to the vaccination center

I got my jab last Tuesday morning but I have to brave the punishing heat of 38 Celsius and the two hours and a half of patiently waiting. I hurdled different queues together with hundreds of mostly seniors. Just like me, they believe that all people should be inoculated for us to get back to what we knew as normal. Except for some hitches which I observed the procedure can stand a little more improvement.

First, there must be more marshals to implement the physical distancing. Second, there should be instructional signs written bilingually in English and Pilipino for everyone to follow. Third, the sound system is weak and easily drowned by the crowd. But all in all, it was a safe and enjoyable ‘journey’ for me. Btw. Congrats to the fielded medical frontliners for being so courteous and friendly to everyone.

As of this writing, the Commission on Elections reported that 3 million more were already registered to vote in the forthcoming 2022 elections. The poll body is still campaigning to have more voters registered and just like the last time they are seeking mall owners in the country to allow their use for registrations. Of course, it is a lot more convenient for people to go to the malls when it comes to this type of event. This comes to mind also that vaccination can also be held in park areas of malls. Here’s my take and humble suggestion. This is for consideration of the city health departments of San Fernando, Mabalacat, and Angeles. We should be innovative.

Say for example in Angeles City, Marquee Mall can host people from the nearby barangays like Pulung Maragul, Sapa Libutad, Cutud, Pulung Cacutud and Pandan. Rolling out the vaccines for people coming from Balibago and Malabanas can be held in SM Clark. It is far more convenient for people to go to the parking areas of malls as against traveling up to the vaccination center in the City College of Angeles campus which is located at the back of Pampang Public market in barangay Lourdes Northwest. I believe the mall owners will welcome the idea.

‘A last gift to an old warrior', said General Douglas MacArthur when after his success in defeating Japan was summoned again by his government to repel the invasion of the North Koreans on South Korea.

I remember this one. It was 2016. 'This will be my last outing as your mayor.' Thus declared Angeles City Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan in a breakfast meeting in Barangay Sapa Libutad one Sunday morning. 'Let young public servants take over the rein'. I read what was in his mind. He must’ve been referring to then Councilor Bryan Nepomuceno whom he wanted to succeed him. But fate was unkind to Bryan, he was defeated in the 2019 elections by Carmelo ‘Pogi’ Lazatin. Pogi Lazatin is a revelation to many. I believe he is ready to take all comers.

Mayor Pamintuan is already in his senior year. He hasn’t forgotten public service. He is still presiding in the board room of the Clark Development Corporation. It may not be a taxing job, but he still works nonetheless. He has still had that youthful look despite the hard work all these past years in government. He may have slowed down compared to the time when he runs for the first time in 1988 as vice mayor. He still has much energy left. More gas in his tank. Dopesters and some of his close friends are saying he may be convinced to square it off for one last time. Abangan.
