THE Department of Agriculture (DA) has embarked on a series of production trainings in Zamboanga del Norte to kick-start the regionwide trainings, as the demand increases for sorghum as one of the primary ingredients for animal feeds.

Rad Donn Cedeño, DA regional executive director, said identified under the agency's corn program, sorghum has interventions focusing on the establishment of model farms, and technology demonstrations to showcase sorghum technologies to farmers.

Cedeño said the trainings were conducted per district of Zamboanga del Norte on May 26, 27 and 28, respectively.

Cedeño said only 25 participants per site were allowed to attend the training, conforming to the safety and health guidelines of the inter-agency task force on coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

He said the schedule of sorghum training for other provinces like Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga Sibugay are already set in the coming weeks.

Miguel Aguilar, marketing specialist of Allied Botanical Inc., served as resource speaker and discussed thoroughly about the sorghum production in the trainings conducted in Zamboanga del Norte.

Marilyn Penolera, CEO/cooperator of 4SH Mushroom Infinity Farm, one of the potential buyers of sorghum, joined in the activity in all sites in the same province.

Penolera encouraged farmers to venture into sorghum production, saying it has sure market with good buying price. (SunStar Zamboanga)
