Eastern Visayas logs 297 cases in another record-breaking day

EASTERN Visayas reported 297 new cases of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) on Saturday, June 5, 2021, setting yet another record in daily cases in the region.

The total number of new cases represent 20 percent positivity rate out of the 1,484 laboratory samples tested in the three Covid-19 laboratories in the region.

The 297 new confirmed cases are from Tacloban City (41), Ormoc City (20), Leyte province (106), Southern Leyte (50), Northern Samar (31), Eastern Samar (14), and

Samar (35).

In a statement, the Department of Health (DOH)-Eastern Visayas noted the increasing trend of new cases from May 30 to June 5.

On May 30, the region logged 124 cases, followed by 72 on May 31, 101 on June 1, 258 on June 2, 276 on June 3, and 220 on June 4.

Due to the surge of infections and the presence of Covid-19 variants of concerns, the Leyte Medical Society also issued an appeal to the public to strictly observe the health protocols and refrain from going out for non-essential travels or activities.

In Tacloban alone, some drivers and operators of public utility vehicles were warned of noncompliance with the minimum health standards amid the increasing number of Covid-19 infections in the city.

The violators were flagged down in a surprise inspection and expanded enforcement operation conducted by the city government through the Business Permits and Licenses Division, and personnel of Tomeco and Tacloban police, according to the City Information Office.

As of Saturday, the DOH-Eastern Visayas reported the region’s total number of Cocid-19 cases at 21,965, total recoveries at 20,142 (91.70 percent), total deaths at 324 (1.48 percent), and total active cases at 1,499 (6.82 percent). (SunStar Philippines)
