Pangan: Servant-leaders

A PRAYER for the 2022 national elections has been institutionalized during the online mass held daily.

It pleads for enlightenment to the elected leaders so that these may serve well, rather than be served. After all, the electorate wields the sovereign power and it is but right that they should be served by the elected leaders fair and square.

Lamentably, in actual practice, this is not so. Most elected candidates suddenly turn their backs on the voters and their (voters) pleas fall on deaf ears.

The candidates promise anything, everything only to renege on them during their respective terms.

Even the incumbent President had too many promises which he was not able to keep. Now that his term is about to end, the voters are left with the proverbial empty bag!

Now that election year 2022 is upon us, we are faced with the prospect of electing national officials on whom we repose our hopes that they will bring us easier lives and comfortable livelihood.

Say, what have we achieved during the six years of the Duterte regime? I'm afraid there is not much to gloat about.

Except for the death of thousands due to the illegal drug war operations and the recurrence of widespread corruption, nothing glorious can be said about Duterte.

And now, another Duterte is being groomed to succeed her father. From one foul-talking Duterte to another hot-tempered Duterte? What? Wala na bang ibang mahusay na kapalit? And the Dutertes should evaluate their optimism: would they serve better the Filipino people or would they just show their mediocre report cards to the ones they swore to serve?

And this Senator Emmanuel Pacquiao. What has he got to serve the Filipino people given his lack of academic credentials? Can his boxing skills translate into excellent managerial talent to bring us economic prosperity and growth?

Pacquiao is immensely popular and whether we like it or not, he could be President due to the support of gullible and awe-struck voters. Sus!
