Kaya FC inches to group stage

KAYA FC-Iloilo moves a step closer into Group Stage of the AFC Champions League after advancing to the play-off round due to the withdrawal of Brisbane Roar and other Australian clubs in the tournament.

Kaya FC-Iloilo was supposed to face Brisbane Roar in the preliminary stage on June 20, 2021 at the Pathum Thani Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

However, for some undisclosed reason Australian clubs Brisbane Roar, Melbourne City FC and Sydney FC backed out of the AFC Champions League.

Kaya FC-Iloilo advances to the play-off stage and takes on Chinese club Shanghai Port FC for a spot in the group stage.

Kaya FC-Iloilo should be in a tough match against Shanghai Port FC, which has a solid roster. Shanghai Port FC’s attack will be led by Brazilian star Oscar, veteran Austrian striker Marko Anautovic, Brazilian forward Ricardo Lopes and Aussie midfielder Aaron Mooy.

Kaya FC-Iloilo and Shanghai Port FC will clash on June 23 at the Pathum Thani Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

If victorious, Kaya FC-Iloilo will also make history, along with United City FC, as the first Filipino club to play in the AFC Champions League, the biggest club tournament in Asia. (EKA)
