FOLLOWING numerous postponements, Cebu’s newest boxing promotional outfit, ARQ Boxing Promotions, will finally stage its first boxing show, “Engkwentro Uno,” on June 19 at the Cosonsa Manufacturing Compound in Ibabao, Mandaue City.

ARQ Boxing Promotions, headed by its owner Jason Arquisola, initially scheduled its maiden boxing show in February. But due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the group hit numerous snags and the event was moved several times.

ARQ Boxing Promotions’ unbeaten prospect April Jay Abne will be the highlight of the show as he takes on Royder Lloyd Borbon in the main event of the first part of the show at 11 a.m.

Abne hopes to continue his unbeaten streak and become a future contender. He won the Ultimate Boxing Series flyweight tournament after beating Ronel Sumalpong by majority decision in the finals in 2019. He fought one more time that year, a second round knockout of Isagani Llaban, before he was sidelined because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Our boxers have been training really hard for a long time now, since the pandemic. They are hungry to fight,” said ARQ Boxing Gym strength and conditioning coach Roger Potot.

Borbon should give Abne a good test because of his experience and his lethal power, wherein all of his wins were via knockout. He has also faced the likes of former world title challenger Robert Paradero and world-rated Clyde Azarcon.

Abne is 5-0 with two knockouts, while Borbon is 6-9-1 with six knockouts.

In the undercard of the first half of the show, Berland Robles (3-2) squares off with Kevin Smith Nemenzo (2-0, 1 KO), Ian Abne (109, 1 KO) clashes with Marvin Campo (0-2) and Zandro “Mini Pacquiao” Librador slugs it out with Rexcar Auxilo (0-1).

The second half of the show is headlined by a six-round flyweight bout between John Paul Gabunillas (3-1, 2 KOs) and undefeated Maurino Agum (2-0, 1 KO).

In the undercard, Rodex Piala (3-4, 1 KO) locks horns with Vicente Casido (6-2-1, 2 KOs), Yeroge Gura takes on Steven Noblefranca (1-2-1) and Arniel Cañete trades leathers with Christopher Caburog (1-0).

ARQ’s venture into boxing is here to stay as it is in search of the next Filipino superstar.

“Basketball is still there. But he (Arquisola) also wants boxing because he fought in the amateurs. He wants to help the new and aspiring boxers. We want to produce a boxer like the boxing senator (Manny Pacquiao). This will be a long-term program. We have been in basketball for 18 years. We also want to do that in boxing,” said ARQ Sports director Chelito Caro. (EKA)
