KAYA FC-Iloilo beefed up its roster for the upcoming playoff match against Shanghai Port FC in the AFC Champions League after signing young prolific scorer Jarvey Gayoso.
The 24-year-old Gayoso is a versatile player who can play in multiple positions. At the collegiate level, he led the Ateneo Blue Eagles to two titles and is a two-time UAAP MVP and a four-time UAAP Best Striker.
Gayoso made his pro debut in the Philippines Football League (PFL) in 2020 with the Azkals Development Team. He played striker in college but was initially played as a defender by Scott Cooper before moving him up as a midfielder later in the season. He scored four goals and had three assists in his rookie season in the PFL.
Gayoso is currently with the Azkals Men’s team right now in the joint FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asia Cup China 2023 qualifiers in Sharjah, UAE. The Azkals are wrapping up the qualifiers with its final Group A match with Maldives on June 15.
After his stint with the Philippines national team, Gayoso will join Kaya FC-Iloilo in Bangkok Thailand for its AFC Champions League playoff match with Shanghai Port FC on June 23.
The winner of the playoff match will enter the Group Stage and will be in Group I along with Thai League champion BG Pathum United, South Korea’s Ulsan Hyundai and Vietnam’s Viettel FC.
Kaya FC-Iloilo, however, faces a tall order in Shanghai port FC, who’ll field the likes of Brazilian star Oscar, Brazilian striker Ricardo Lopes, Austrian forward Marko Anautovic and Aussie midfielder Aaron Mooy.
If Kaya FC-Iloilo loses to Shanghai Port FC, the Filipino club will be eliminated from the AFC Champions League and will join Group I in the second tier AFC Cup. Kaya FC-Iloilo is grouped with Singapore’s Geylang International FC, Malaysia’s Terengganu FC and winner of the match between Cambodia’s Visakha FC and Timor-Leste’s Lalenok United FC. (EKA)
