PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte extended the modified enhanced community quarantine status (MECQ) in Davao City until the end of the month.

Duterte announced on Monday evening, June 14, that the city will still be under MECQ until June 30.

The President also announced that the province of Davao del Norte will remain under general community quarantine (GCQ) until the end of the month.

Meanwhile, Davao de Oro, Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur (except Digos City), and Davao Occidental will be under modified GCQ (MGCQ) for the remaining months of June.

The updated quarantine classification was based on the approval of the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF).

The IATF recently granted the request of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio to place the entire Davao City from June 5 to 20 under MECQ after the city experienced a surge of Covid-19 cases.

Duterte-Carpio initially requested that the city be placed under MECQ until June 30 but the IATF did not explain why it only granted her request for only 16 days, until June 20.

Davao del Norte reverted to GCQ effective Thursday, June 10, until June 30, 2021.

Davao del Norte Governor Edwin Jubahib said the current Covid-19 case surge in Davao del Norte overwhelmed their critical care and treatment facilities.

Based on the Department of Health-Davao Region data as of June 14, Davao Region has a total of 33,962 confirmed cases, wherein 6,722 are active cases, 26,008 recovered, and 1,232 succumbed to the virus.

Davao City, the epicenter of the Covid-19 transmission in the region, has a total of 19,996 confirmed cases, wherein 3,477 are active cases, 15,713 recovered, and 806 died.

Davao del Norte has a total of 6,412 confirmed cases, with 1,500 active cases, 4,717 recoveries, and 195 deaths.
