Comelec-Zamboanga City office remains closed

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) said its local office in Zamboanga City will remain closed following the extension of the modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) until June 30 in this city.

Lawyer Stephen Roy Cañete, first district election officer, said the registration of voters remains on hold with the extension of the MECQ.

The Comelec is supposed to be conducting voter registration but was put on hold after this city was placed effective May 8 under MECQ amid the increasing cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

The registration of voters is in preparation for the 2022 national and local elections.

Cañete said they will continue with the work-from-home scheme since their office remains closed due to the extension of the MECQ.

Meanwhile, Cañete said the 2022 elections will push through since the budget has already been allocated.

Cañete said the conduct of the presidential election cannot be postponed as stipulated under the Philippine Constitution. (SunStar Zamboanga)
