Palmres-Moises: Health is wealth

Palmres-Moises: Health is wealth

M: Maintaining good health is a gift we can give to ourselves. More than a year after the pandemic, I truly realized that health is wealth. Even with the anxiety and stress that the pandemic brought about, let’s continue to be thankful for what we have or don’t have. If you have good health, be thankful for it. If you don’t have any aches and pains that come with age, be thankful for it. With negative news on economic, political and other news around us, it’s easy to be pessimistic rather than optimistic. But as I always believe, pain is inevitable but misery is optional. If we can inspire and be inspired, we will always remember that life is a blessing and there is hope for as long as we have faith.

DJ: I agree. As I age, I realize that no one has an easy life. We all have our crosses to bear. A person might be financially rich but be poor in spirit. The reverse can also be true. We can’t have everything. Pain is part of life. A person who loves deeply is blessed with meaningful relationships but he or she will never be spared from pain. A person who is passionate wins in the end but he or she is never free from disappointments. But with courage, however, we learn our lessons and move on. It’s not really what we have. It’s what we do with what we have that makes the difference. Things will not always happen the way we want them to. But we can still decide to be happy, healthy and choose to live our best life yet.

M: Last June 13, I started walking at least three kilometers every day to prepare for my ambitious goal of doing a 15-kilometer run-walk for the IBP Cebu City chapter’s first Law and Justice Virtual Run, which will be held between July 15 and 21. The activity not only seeks to bring together a community bound under a common goal for peace, justice, law and order, but also aims to provide opportunities for an individual to pursue health and wellness. I have always been battling with my weight and sometimes it’s easy to just give up. But I realize that quitters never win and winners never quit. I want to win the battle with the bulge, sooner rather than later. I have to think, one day or day one? I decide every day that it will be Day One. So far I’m on my eighth day. DJ, why don’t you sign up on ibprun2021.myruntime.com and do 21 kilometers? I know you can do it!

DJ: I will sign up and join the IBP Cebu City Law and Justice Virtual Run. Now that I am getting older, I am more conscious of my health, getting into better shape and making healthier food and lifestyle choices. Twelve years ago, I remember attending a birthday party for my friend’s dad. I was struck with what his dad said during his “Thank You” speech. He said he was not only thankful but also proud that he was 50 years old. Some people are embarrassed to share their age. Some are embarrassed about how they look. We can decide to do something to not just look better but feel and be better. Come to think it, how many people are willing to spend all their wealth, everything they own, just for them to reach 50 or more and be healthy and strong? Or even just to live for a year? So why are some women shy about their age when it’s supposed to be something that should get them on their feet and shout it out like a cheerleader? It’s not always what it is that matters. Sometimes, it’s how we look at it. But still, a man who correctly guesses a woman’s age is said to be smart. But not very bright. Now that’s another story.

M: Frankly, I don’t mind talking about my age. I am more concerned about being asked how much I weigh. But that’s another story! If there is one thing I learned during this pandemic, it is to hope for the best, to not lose faith, challenge my limits and think positive, while always praying that we are all negative for Covid.

DJ: This reminds me of what a good friend shared with me. A survivor’s mindset is different because he or she believes only a few things can be worse. In these confusing times, spiritual strength is what will save us from seeking the easy answers to difficult questions. And usually, it’s either we change how you see ourselves or we change how we see the world. There’s got to be something that’s good in every person or situation and a lesson in every failure. Life is tough but we can get past every challenge if we continue to run (or walk) the race set before us. Let’s keep on keeping on.
