Daily Covid-19 cases stay above 6,000 as positivity rate remains high

NEW coronavirus infections are slowly declining nationwide, but remain above 6,000 a day as the daily positivity rate continues to average 13 percent, the Department of Health (DOH) case bulletins in the past week showed.

In the recent seven days from June 14 to 20, 2021, new cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid.19) averaged 6,208 a day, about 6.0 percent lower than the 6,611 daily average in the previous week from June 7 to 13.

On Sunday, June 20, 2021, DOH reported 5,803 new Covid-19 cases and a higher daily positivity rate of 13.2 percent based on tests done two days earlier.

The new cases brought the total case count in the Philippines to 1,359,015, including 57,679 active cases in hospitals and isolation facilities.

Eight duplicates, including six recoveries and one death, were removed from the count.

There were 84 additional mortalities, lower than the daily death toll of over 100 in the previous five days. These included 59 cases that were previously tagged as recoveries but were validated to be deaths.

The total Covid-19 death toll went up to 23,621, but the case fatality rate remained at 1.74 percent.

The DOH bulletin also reported 7,652 new recoveries, bringing the total to 1,277,715, which accounts for 94 percent of the total case count. There were 115 cases that were reclassified as active cases.

A total of 48,073 samples were tested for Sars-CoV-2, of which 13.2 percent yielded positive results, on June 18. Two laboratories failed to submit their data to the Covid-19 Document Repository System.

On Saturday, June 19, DOH’s Covid-19 tracker showed that the highest number of new cases were recorded in the following: Laguna, 357; Davao City, 252; Cagayan, 230; Cavite, 216; Quezon City, 214; Bataan, 203; Negros Oriental, 199; Batangas, 188; Bohol, 181; and Negros Occidental, 173.

In the last 14 days to June 19, the highest number of new cases among the regions were in Calabarzon with 9,106; National Capital Region, 8,546; Western Visayas, 7,930; Central Luzon, 6,233; and Davao Region. 4,709.

Among the cities and provinces, the highest 14-day running total was noted in Laguna, 2,762; Cavite, 2,535; Davao City, 2,421; Batangas, 1,770; and Bulacan, 1,691.

As of June 30, more than 178.2 million people have contracted Covid-19 and over 3.86 million had died globally, according to Johns Hopkins. The Philippines had the 24th highest number of cases.
