Fetalvero: Dragon talk

Awareness of the benefits of antioxidants has resulted in the influx of local tourists to the Dragon Fruit Farm in the mountain barangay of Cabadiangan in Liloan.

In a talk with Mhy Cogal, owner of Mhy J’s Refreshment and Dragon Fruit Farm, I learned that the 8,000-square-meter plantation is home to 1,370 posts that hold hundreds of cacti that yield the most nutritious and delicious dragon fruits ever in this northern part of Cebu Province.

Starting its operations in April 2018, the farm is run by purok community residents who assist the owner in making the farm very productive and a good respite to visitors who do not only come to the place to buy the sumptuous fruit but enjoy as well the refreshing cold shake offered by what is now a very popular tourist destination, especially on weekends.

Mhy is still trying to improve the place to make it a comfortable and delightful visit for tourists, with the installation of a viewing deck where visitors have a full view of the surrounding mountain barangays. It is quite a big contrast to the bustling surrounding of downtown Liloan where smoky lechon manok stalls abound. Free from pollution, the green scenery assures visitors of clean air and the shake is a healthier alternative to a glass of milk tea.

One would think that the dragon fruit has its origins in China as the fearsome gigantic reptile is the center of any Chinese festivity. Dragon fruit is native to Mexico, Central America and South America where most of the cactus species abound. It was introduced to Asia via Vietnam by the French in the early 1800s.

The fruit, which has a unique appearance, sweet taste and crunchy texture, is rich in antioxidants like flavonoids, phenolic acid and betacyanin. It is naturally fat-free and high in fiber. It is also rich in vitamins and minerals. It contains prebiotics which feed the healthy bacteria called probiotics in our gut. It strengthens the immune system.

Medical News Today reported that dragon fruit enhances glycemic control or blood sugar control in those with type 2 diabetes. It lowers blood sugar.

Considering the above-mentioned health benefits, it is no wonder that residents of Liloan and its neighboring municipalities gravitate towards the Mhy’s Dragon Fruit Farm whenever they can. The farm is just 20 minutes from Poblacion, Liloan.
