THE Quisumbing patriarch, Dr. Norberto Quisumbing Jr., was laid to rest in Q-Park in Compostela, Cebu on Monday, June 21, 2021, three days after his death on Friday at 90.

The business tycoon’s remains were cremated in a funeral home in Metro Manila on Sunday afternoon, June 20.

The urn containing his ashes was flown to Cebu and arrived at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport on Monday morning. It was then transported to Q-Park, which was built in 2004 by the Norkis Group of Companies.

The interment in Q-Park was attended by Quisumbing’s siblings, close relatives and a few personal friends, according to veteran broadcaster Circe “Choy” Torralba, a friend of the late businessman.

Aside from his business acumen, Quisumbing was also known for his philanthropy, especially in the field of education, said educator Milagros Espina, who posted on Facebook that Quisumbing “occupies the foremost place in the hall of fame” of business, education, scholarship and tradition.

“We will remember his scholarship programs for the University of San Jose-Recoletos, University of the Philippines and University of Southern Philippines high school students for decades,” Espina wrote.

Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes, who was supported by Quisumbing in the 2019 elections, said he was “deeply saddened” by the passing of the businessman, “one of Mandaue City’s treasured sons.”

“His contributions to Mandaue’s business and commerce are invaluable. And even now, his legacy continues to echo throughout Mandaue,” he said.

The Norkis Group of Companies is based in Mandaue City.

In 2014, Quisumbing received the “Award of Distinction” from the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He used the occasion to ask fellow entrepreneurs to give to the poor, saying his company had set up two foundations dedicated to educating the poor; and to strengthen faith, built Q-Parks in Compostela, Cebu and Malaybalay, Bukidnon to give others a place for prayer and meditation.
