Covid-19 deaths surpass 24,000

THE Department of Health (DOH) on Thursday, June 24, 2021, reported 108 additional mortalities from coronavirus disease 2019, pushing the death toll past 24,000

In its case bulletin, the DOH recorded a total of 24,036 deaths from Covid-19 in the country. The case fatality rate remained at 1.74 percent.

The additional deaths included 61 cases that were previously tagged as recoveries.

The DOH also reported 6,043 new infections, bringing the total case count to 1,378,260. Fifteen duplicates, including nine recoveries, were removed from the case count.

The number of active cases pushed past 50,000 again as more infections were recorded than the recoveries on June 22.

The 4,486 brought the total number of recoveries to 1,302,814, or 94.5 percent of the total case count.

As of June 24, there remained 51,410 active Covid-19 cases in hospitals and isolation facilities. The number includes 44 cases that were previously tagged as recoveries.

The daily positivity rate remained high at 12 percent out of the 46,497 samples tested on June 22. Only one laboratory failed to submit its data to the Covid-19 Document Repository System.

Earlier, DOH Epidemiology Bureau Director Alethea de Guzman flagged seven provinces with high to critical healthcare utilization rates (HCUR) or intensive care unit (ICU) utilization rates.

De Guzman identified these as Zambales, Tarlac, Pampanga, Misamis Occidental, Oriental Mindoro and Benguet.

A total of 33 cities and provinces across the country were also flagged for their high to critical utilization rates.

Among the regions, four were classified as high risk in terms of their case growth rate and average daily attack rate. These are Caraga, Western Visayas, Davao and Soccsksargen. (Marites Villamor-Ilano / SunStar Philippines)
