TWO children, ages two and eight months old, were rescued by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Central Visayas when they raided suspected drug dens in two barangays in Cebu City on Friday, June 25, 2021.

Lawyer Renan Oliva, NBI 7 director, said they decided to rescue the two children after they were reportedly exposed to illegal drugs by their parents.

One of the two children was reportedly given shabu by his mother to prevent him from crying.

Oliva said just before the separate raids, they received information that two drug dens were operating in Sitio Iphai in Barangay Punta Princesa and Sitio Imhai in Barangay Mambaling.

They immediately conducted surveillance in both areas, where they received confirmation that children were exposed to illegal drugs in those dens.

On Friday, June 25, operatives led by NBI 7 agent Agapito Gierran conducted the raid in both drug dens which resulted in the arrest of seven people.

Arrested in the Punta Princesa raid were Krisanto Saavedra from Barangay Suba, Cebu City; Alfredo Omeres from Barangay Mambaling; Melchor Imus from Barangay Punta Princesa; Regino Gabuya from Barangay Punta Princesa and Jakyl Rosacena from Mambaling.

Those arrested at the Mambaling raid were Ruchie Torres and Arturo Abellana, both residing in the same barangay.

But one of the drug dens’ owners, identified as the father of the two rescued children in Punta Princesa, escaped arrest.

Neighbors of the two children narrated to Gierran that the minors would often stay up even until dawn as they were allowed by their parents to sniff illegal drugs.

The two children are now under the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Central Visayas, while their parents are set to be charged for managing a drug den and for violating Republic Act 7610 or the Anti-Child Abuse Law.

Oliva said they plan to have the two children medically examined to determine if there have been any negative effects after they were exposed to illegal drugs by their own parents. (AYB / JKV)
