Kaya puts up good fight, but loses to old champ Ulsan

Kaya FC-Iloilo suffered yet another defeat but put on a gallant stand against AFC Champions League defending champion Ulsan Hyundai FC last July 2, 2021 at the Pathum Thani Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

Kaya FC-Iloilo was the huge underdog against one of the best clubs in Asia, but the Filipino side played better than expected.

Kaya FC-Iloilo was aggressive early on but failed to score in the opening minute from an attempt by Daizo Horikoshi coming from a corner kick by Kenshiro Daniels.

South Korean striker Oh Se-hun hit the opening goal in the 12th minute coming from a pass by Georgian attacking midfielder Valeri Qazaishvili.

Oh scored his second goal in the 40th minute from a free kick by Hong Chul that hit Oh’s shoulder and into the back of the net.

Qazaishvili scored a third goal for Ulsan Hyundai FC in the 48th minute.

Daniels had a perfect opportunity to score Kaya FC-Iloilo’s first goal, but Ulsan Hyundai FC goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo deflected his attempt.

Kaya FC-Iloilo remained winless in the tournament and sits at the bottom of Group F, while Ulsan Hyundai FC remained at the top with nine points and won its 12th straight AFC Champions League match that dates back to last season.

On the other hand, Philippines Football League champion United City FC (UCFC) continued its slump after an 8-0 whipping in the hands of J1 League titlist Kawasaki Frontale in Group I at the Lokomotiv Stadium in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Kento Tachibanada scored a hattrick for Kawasaki Frontale with goals in the 56th, 65th and 70th minutes. Kaoro Mitoma scored a brace with goals in the 33rd and 82nd minutes. Ryota Oshima (42nd) and Brazilian forward Leandro Damiao (50th) added a goal each.

UCFC also remained at the bottom with a point, while Kawasaki Frontale stayed at the top with nine points. (EKA)
