Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala kicks off her bid for a third grand slam title when she competes against unheralded Solana Sierra of Argentina in the Wimbledon Championships girls’ tournament on Monday evening at the at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London.
The 16-year old is seeded second in this competition and is looking to win her very first grand slam singles title. The closest she’s come to doing so was in 2020 when she reached the semifinals of the French Open, becoming the first Filipino netter to achieve the feat since Felix Barrientos did it more than 30 years ago in the Wimbledon boys’ competition.
Standing opposite Eala is the 17-year old Sierra who is unseeded in the girls’ tilt and is ranked no. 1093 in the Women’s Tennis Association singles rankings. The game is set to commence at 6 p.m. (Philippine time)
Eala, the no. 3 ranked juniors player in the world and no. 629 in the WTA ladder, already has two grand slam titles to her name but these came in the doubles competitions of the 2020 Australian Open and just recently, the French Open.
Eala will also be competing in the doubles competition in Wimbledon but the draw has yet to be announced. (JNP)
