Village chief killed, son wounded in gun attack

A VILLAGE official was killed, while his son was injured in a gun attack in the province of Zamboanga Sibugay, the police reported Monday, July 5, 2021.

Police Brigadier General Ronaldo Genaro Ylagan, Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula director, identified the fatality as Abubakar Abdurahim Nieto, 72, the village chairperson of Bangkaw-Bangkaw, Naga, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Wounded was Nieto’s son, Idral Ibba Nieto, 30. He was hospitalized with a bullet wound on the left arm.

Ylagan said they were shot by five unidentified gunmen around 10:15 p.m. Sunday at Purok Higad in Bangkaw-Bangkaw village, Naga.

Ylagan said investigation showed that the village chief visited a neighbor, Arnold Lumatap, when the suspects arrived on foot and opened fire.

He said the suspects shot Nieto’s son, who tried to come to the rescue of his father. The suspected fled to the coast of Bangkaw-Bangkaw village.

He said the victims were rushed to the hospital but the attending physician declared the village chief dead on arrival.

He said recovered from the crime scene were empty shells of caliber 5.56-millimeter rifle.

He said investigation is underway to unmask the identities of the suspects behind the incident. (SunStar Zamboanga)
