PNP launches website to fight cybercrimes

THE Philippine National Police (PNP) has launched its enhanced anti-cybercrime campaign, which aims to strengthen the fight against crimes committed through online platforms amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.

PNP-Anti-Cybercrime Group Director Robert Rodriguez said extortion and financial fraud via internet have increased since the Covid-19 pandemic started.

“Before the pandemic, the highest was cyber libel but in 2020, noong nagkaroon na ng pandemic, naunahan po ng financial fraud o scam,” he said.

This has prompted the PNP to come up with an intensified anti-cybercrime platform dubbed Enhanced Anti Cybercrime Campaign, Education, Safety And Security, or E-Access, at cybercrimewatch.pnp.gov.ph

PNP Chief Guillermo Eleazar said the platform has two divisions, cyber web and cyber watch.

Cyber web, can be used to file complaints and report online scammers which will form the basis for the conduct of operations.

Cyber watch is where netizens can verify a social media account, person, cell phone number and e-mail addresses that are the subject of cybercrime complaints.

“You are witness sa pagtaas ng online scams na nabibiktima ang ating mga kababayan because of this pandemic...We need your cooperation on this one. We cannot solve this cybercrime if you cannot report this,” said Eleazar.

“Time and again, we are appealing to them na huwag po kayong panghinaan ng loob na minsan man na report sa atin at di pa natin na solve kasi we have our limitations and we admit that, but we are trying our best to improve our system,” he added.

Eleazar assured that the identities of the complainants are protected.

The website also contains a list of reported crimes and tips on how to avoid them, especially cybercrimes. (SunStar Philippines)
