Police officer, driver die in head-on collision

TWO persons, including a police officer, were killed while two others were wounded in a head-on collision in the province of Zamboanga del Sur, the police reported Sunday, July 11, 2021.

Police Major Shellamie Chang, Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula information officer, identified the fatalities as Police Lieutenant Venus Jagus Dela Peña, assigned with the police station in Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur, and Roy Divinagracia, a driver.

Wounded were Jimmy Panoncial and his daughter, Jillian. They were hospitalized.

Chang said the incident occurred around 9:35 p.m. Friday, July 9, along the national highway in Purok Salingsing, Balintawak village, Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur.

She said investigation showed that Dela Peña was aboard a three-wheeler cab locally known as “Bao-Bao” driven by Divinagracia from Pagadian City to Dumalinao when they were accidentally collided by a pick-up truck driven Omar Tampugao, 35, who was traveling in opposite direction.

Chang said the father and daughter Panoncial were injured as the pick-up truck, after the head-on collision, crashed and damaged their house at the side of the road.

She said all the four victims were rushed to the Aisah Hospital in San Pedro village, Pagadian City, but Dela Peña and Divinagracia expired while undergoing medical treatment. (SunStar Zamboanga)
