DUMAGUETE CITY – The provincial government of Negros Oriental is giving each of 565 deserving college students a PHP5,000 financial grant for the second semester of the school year 2020-2021.

Capitol information officer Bimbo Miraflor, in an interview Sunday afternoon, said the total amount of assistance is taken from the General Fund of the province for the Student Financial Assistance Program of Governor Roel Degamo’s administration.

Miraflor said the grant is for the students' allowances after the provincial government announced it would be giving free college education to those enrolled in public institutions.

The provincial government previously offered scholarships to indigent but deserving students but it was cut short after the national government's free education program started, he said.

Degamo, after being elected governor in 2011, again implemented the scholarship program but this time giving grants for allowances to pre-identified recipients, he added.

Of the total number of recipients, 257 college students are from the province's first district, 213 from the second district, and 95 from the third district, a post from the official Facebook page of the provincial government showed. (PNA)
