Pangan: On reaching diamond year

LIKE most of my high school classmates Batch 1963 at then St. Anthony Jr. College, we will be reaching a milestone of 75 years.

Some have already passed on ahead of us, others have migrated to the US, Canada and elsewhere. Some have remained alive but immobile and that's why we've been thinking of having another reunion, the first one staged in 2018.

Three years have lapsed since that event and classmate Cely Tungol has urged me to organize another meet-and-greet activity to renew our ties. It seemed like a good idea and Doming Policarpio nodded in agreement.

By this time, all the members of Batch 1963 are septuagenarians with different preoccupations.

The proposed reunion will bring together batchmates who are in their "twilight" years, so to speak, with Engracia Rivera-Velasquez enjoying hers in Maryland, USA and Nancy David living on the West Coast.

They are ready to come, given the formal invite to the reunion.

A welcome news is that announcement about Manuel V. Pangilinan, a prominent businessman and CEO of many A-1 businesses and conglomerates such as PLDT, Smart, Meralco and the Hong Kong-based Metro Pacific Holdings.

MVP, as he is widely known, celebrated his 75th birthday, his diamond milestone last July 14, 2021 and well-wishers were expectedly hyped at his good traits as they poured their adulations in a birthday supplement in a national broadsheet, the Daily Tribune.

In an article written by Iris Gonzales titled MVP at 75, she wrote: Seventy five is quite a number, anyone who has reached 75 years between time and space, between one's heart and another or between body and soul- knows it's both a feat and a gift. Most marriages dont even make it that long and for inmates, a 75 year prison term may already seem more than a 100 lifetimes.

For MVP, all things favorable have come his way.

For others, it is still a struggling process, a hard climb to the top. I just hope my 1963 batchmates would succeed even in their waning years!
