THE Visayan Electric Company is warning their consumers that several power interruptions can occur as the wet season continues to bring more unusual weather changes.

Quennie Bronce, Visayan Electric’s reputation enhancement manager, said the power outages are expected to occur as most of their lines and other equipment are susceptible to damage anytime as they are often exposed to rains, heat and winds.

But Bronce assured that their emergency crews have been deployed in their franchise area to address power outages that may occur in some area .

Visayan Electric’s franchise covers Liloan in northern Cebu to San Fernando, Cebu in the south.

Meanwhile, the various Covid-19 lockdowns that occurred in 2020 affected consumer power demand, Bronce said.

Bronce said that in 2021, the power demand reached 510 megawatts (MW) in March, 502 MW in April, 525 MW in May, and 518 MW in June. This is in comparison to 2020, where demand was at 554 MW in March, 395 MW in April, 421 MW in May and 464 MW in June.

Demand in 2021 was still low compared to 2019, where 518 MW was recorded in March 2019, 539 MW in April, 563 MW in May and 576 MW in June.

Bronce said 2020’s demand was driven only by residential customers since commercial and industrial sectors were closed and people were mostly at home.

She said although the 2021 demand is lower than 2019’s, demand is slowly picking up as more commercial establishments are starting to return to business. (MVE)
