FILIPINA boxing bet Nesthy Petecio is two wins away from the finals after beating top seed Yu-Ting Lin in the Round of 16 of the Women’s Featherweight division of Boxing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on July 26 at the Kokugikan Arena in Tokyo, Japan.
The 29-year-old Petecio was in a competitive fight with Lin, who got an outright spot in the Round of 16 for being the No. 1 seed. She, however, beat Lin 3-2 on points.
Indonesian judge Muhammad Arisa Putra Pohan, Russian judge Yaroslav Renev and Algerian judge Mohamed Besmi all scored it 29-28 for Petcio. Cuban judge Wilfredo Vazquez Calero and German judge Susann Kopke saw Lin winning with identical scores of 29-28.
Petecio takes on Colombian Yeni Marcel Arias Castaneda in the quarterfinals on July 28.
Meanwhile, Carlo Paalam breezed through his first assignment after a 4-1 points win over Irish Brendan Irvine in the Round of 32 of the Men’s Flyweight division of Boxing.
Paalam got the nod of four of the five judges with scores of 30-29, 29-28, 30-27 and 29-28. Irvine only had the nod of one judge with a 29-28 score.
Paalam advanced to the Round of 16 and will take on Algerian Mohamed Flissi on July 31.
On the other hand, five Filipino athletes are seeing action Tuesday, July 27, in four different sporting events.
Cebuana Elreen Ann Ando guns for a gold medal in the Women’s 64 KG Weightlifting event in her Olympic debut at the Tokyo International Forum.
Kiyomi Watanabe, another Cebuana athlete, is up against Cristina Cabana Perez in the Round of 32 of the Women’s -63KG division of Judo at the Nippon Budokan.
The Philippines’ lone Rowing athlete, Cris Nievarez, competes in the Men’s Single Sculls Semifinals C/D 1 event at the Sea Forest Water Way.
In swimming, Luke Gebbie is competing in Heat 5 of the Men’s 100M Freestyle, while Remedy Rul is competing in Heat 3 of the Women’s 200M Butterfly at the Tokyo Aquatic Center. (EKA)
