CEBU City Mayor Edgardo Labella is “alive and well.”

A photo was posted on the mayor’s Facebook page on Saturday, July 31, 2021, showing him holding a Saturday issue of a newspaper.

Jaypee, the mayor’s son, said his father is scheduled to be discharged next week.

The photo aims to put an end to rumors that the mayor has died.

“I would like to inform everyone na (that) I’m alive and doing well,” wrote the mayor on his Facebook post.

This was the first time Labella posted a photo of himself since he was admitted to the hospital last July 13 for a persistent cough, which was later confirmed to be due to pneumonia.

Labella is currently on medical leave after he was advised to remain in the hospital for treatment.

City Administrator Floro Casas Jr. said the mayor is expected to be discharged on Tuesday, Aug. 3.

Casas said Labella’s condition has improved, adding that the mayor has been requesting for his favorite food.

When asked if the mayor plans to take legal action against those who are spreading rumors about his death, Casas said it is possible. However, he said he also knows the mayor prefers to stay silent.

“I’m not sure. Knowing Mayor, di mana siya ganahan og gubot gud... Di sya anang kiha-kiha (I’m not sure. But knowing Mayor, he does not want any trouble or lawsuits),” Casas said.

Labella thanked everybody who prayed and supported him.

Casas earlier said the mayor would probably work from home after his release from hospital considering the coronavirus disease 2019 situation in the city.

This year, the mayor first took a leave of absence in January when he suffered from an ear infection.

On May 31, he took a three-day leave after he was hospitalized for “slight pneumonia.” On June 9, he took a three-week leave to fully recover from sepsis. On July 14, he took a three-day leave due to a persistent cough. (JJL)
