Philippines Covid-19 cases hit 1.6 million

FOR the fourth day in a row, new coronavirus infections exceeded 8,000, pushing the cumulative case count nationwide past 1.6 million, the Department of Health (DOH) reported Monday, August 2, 2021.

In its case bulletin, the DOH listed 8,167 new cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) , 77 additional deaths and 9,095 new recoveries.

The daily positivity rate climbed to 15.7 percent out of 50,601 samples tested for Sars-CoV-2 on July 31. One laboratory was not operational while three laboratories failed to submit their testing data to the Covid-19 Document Repository System.

The new infections brought the cumulative case count to 1,605,762, after the removal of 94 duplicates that included 20 cases tagged as recoveries.

The additional deaths, which included 29 cases previously tagged as recoveries, raised the death toll from Covid-19 in the Philippines to 28,093. The case fatality rate remained at 1.75 percent.

The new recoveries brought the total to 1,515,054, comprising 94.4 percent of the total count.

There were 19 cases tagged as recoveries that were found to be active cases, bringing the number of active cases to 62,615.

Of the active cases, 1.2 percent were critical, 2.1 percent were severe, 1.48 percent were moderate, 93.9 percent were mild and 1.3 percent were asymptomatic. (Marites Villamor-Ilano / SunStar Philippines)
