MY FRIEND Maureen Ava David sent me a message that she needs to see me because I have a gift to receive from someone. I felt cryptic. And so last Wednesday, Maureen was truthful in her words, she handed me that special gift. I was amazed and at the same time confused. Who is this person who remembered me even without an occasion? My birthday falls in September and Christmas is in December. Wow, truly surprising!
After 27 years -- Joseph Xavier Rom, high school classmate, who am I to receive an unexpected gift from him? He was not very close to me. We do not talk often. Not until we both get the chance to communicate way back in 2017 when we are already married with kids, finally talking about life, and appreciating each other’s works.
I guess some people may come early in our lives and then go. Some came early, did not blossom immediately, but then, in the end, were nourishing. Like, Joseph, aside from my family, became my inspiration to write more about my thoughts and experiences. He constantly reads my articles and inspires me not to stop writing to heal the sick world.
I have learned that one can find true friendship even to people whom we least expect. I wonder where those best friends are when we are penniless? I say verily that sometimes even those we considered as our best friends will be those who shall not remember us.
I have learned that there are still people who can share gifts even without an occasion. And this I can say is the most memorable gift because one is remembered not because there is a specific occasion to celebrate, but the friendship itself is a celebration.
And I have learned that successful people are not selfish to appreciate and value other people’s contributions and achievements. Why do I say this? Because people have the tendency to fear being overpowered by others. Only a few would not like to be in the limelight but instead, desire to be popular.
Yeah, I have indeed experienced all the above because of the humility of Joseph. He is always willing to be little for others to have much. And never has been arrogant. It is fulfilling to hear his appreciation for my passion for teaching, nursing, and writing, which inspires me to do more. Indeed, an angel in disguise!
