IN ORDER to accommodate more Covid-19 patients, the Cebu City Health Department (CCHD) is set to open its “Mega Isolation Center” at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) this week.

Dr. Jeffrey Ibones, CCHD acting head, said 10 nurses and one doctor will be assigned in the facility.

He encouraged medicine graduates to apply before his office to help address the lack of doctors in some isolation centers.

Separately, Cebu City Acting Mayor Michael Rama said he has directed City Administrator Floro Casas Jr. to allow the Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC) to accommodate Covid-19 patients as a way to address the increasing number of patients in some hospitals.

He said both the CCMC and the “Mega Isolation Center” must be operational after three days.

“I want to see CCMC already being done, and that would be my directive,” Rama said during a press conference on Monday, Aug. 2, 2021.

The CCHD also deployed 100 contractual nurses to the Cebu City Quarantine Center (CCQC) to address the inadequate manpower there.

Ibones said Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak also asked him for nurses for barangay ambulances to be utilized for the extraction of Covid-19 patients.

Meanwhile, Ibones said the city’s vaccination rollout will continue despite the city being placed under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ).

Ibones discouraged individuals who want to flock to the vaccination sites without text confirmation from the City.

Ibones said they expect 1,000 vaccinees per vaccination site for their second dose from Aug. 2 to 15.

Meanwhile, with the consistent increase of Covid-19 cases, Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes contemplated providing accommodation for the medical frontliners in both public and private hospitals.

In his press conference, Cortes said during the peak of the pandemic in 2020, the city provided lodging for the healthcare workers.

He said this is for the safety of the healthcare workers’ families, considering their line of work.

Before, the city housed them in motels near the hospitals they worked in, said Cortes.

He said now, they are looking at pension houses near the hospitals as shelter for the medical frontliners.

Cortes said the city’s goal is to contain the spread of Covid-19 within the two-week MECQ.

“If the nurses and doctors continue to commute to and from work, it might cause the transmission of the virus,” said Cortes.

He also said they will schedule a meeting with the hospital administrators for both public and private hospitals in the city to discuss what assistance the city can provide them with in this fight against Covid-19 and with the presence of the Delta variant.

Cortes urged the public to also take part in containing the virus by following the quarantine protocol. (MVE, KFD)
