Nesthy Petecio wins silver medal

AIBA 2019 Women's World Boxing featherweight champion Nesthy Alcayde Petecio fell short of the gold and settled for the silver medal instead for the Philippines after bowing to her nemesis, Sena Irie of Japan, via unanimous decision in their Tokyo 2020 Olympics women's featherweight gold medal match at the Kokugikan Arena.

The silver was the first Olympic medal won by a Filipino female boxer and the country's second medal won in the ongoing Games after weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz of Zamboanga City ended the country's 97-year gold medal drought on July 26.

The 20-year-old Irie got the nod of all five judges in the first round, 5-0, while 29-year-old Petecio bounced back with a 4-1 edge in the second round.

Petecio may have been aggressive and scored on some punches in the final round but it was not enough to convince the judges who gave the Japanese a 5-0 unanimous triumph. (SunStar Davao)
