THE “Kayanakan Kontra AMR” Project of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) of San Nicolas 1 in Magalang has made it to the roster of national finalists in the 2nd National Search for Outstanding SK Project Awards.

Spearheaded by the Positive Youth Development Network (PYDN) and the Galing Pook Foundation, the annual search aims to showcase the most outstanding youth-led initiatives among SK councils in the Philippines.

It is a seal of excellence for SK councils committed to building a better world through local high-impact innovations focusing on the following centers of participation of the Philippine Youth Development Plan: health, education, economic empowerment, social inclusion and equity, peace-building and security, environment, and active citizenship and governance.

Out of the 273 SKs who expressed their interests in joining the competition, only 23 entries emerged in the national finalist shortlist.

The SK San Nicolas 1’s Kayanakan Kontra AMR is the lone entry of Pampanga and Central Luzon to vie for the coveted national award under the health category.

The Kayanakan Kontra AMR (Youth Against Antimicrobial Resistance) is a youth-led and evidence-based community intervention that is aimed to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and improper use of antibiotics in the grassroots.

The AMR study in Barangay San Nicolas 1 was conducted by the SK officials in partnership with the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health (ASMPH).

Launched in April 2021, the campaign is a call for awareness and action in the community especially among mothers in the barangay (primary caregivers of the youth) who have inadequate and improper knowledge on antibiotics use and AMR. Hence, translating to a significant prevalence of improper antibiotic self-medication in the community.

“The main objective of the project is to proactively protect the community, especially the youth, from the grave consequences of AMR,” said Lacson, who is also a medical student at the ASMPH.

For the next round of the competition, the national search committee is set to hold an Online Project Expo wherein the entries of each of the national finalists will be exhibited through a poster to be published on PYDN Facebook page.

The entry with the highest “heart” reaction shall be considered the ceiling percentage and the basis of the scoring. The results of the top 3 grand finalists will be released on August 5, 2021 and shall face another set of juries for the final presentation.
