THE Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Mactan urged the public to be vigilant about the effects of the extension of a low pressure area (LPA) east of Eastern Samar that may bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over the Visayas, Northern Mindanao and Caraga Region in the next 24 hours.

Jomar Eclarino, Pagasa Mactan weather specialist, said the LPA entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Aug. 7, 2021 but remains less likely to develop into a tropical depression within 12 to 24 hours.

“This weather condition we’re experiencing that’s cloudy with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms, is caused by an extension of the low pressure area, 610 kilometers east of Eastern Samar,” Eclarino said.

He said the extension of the LPA will continue to bring occasional heavy rains and thunderstorms in the areas from Aug. 9 to 10. He advised the public to continue to monitor weather updates especially those in flashflood and landslide-prone and other vulnerable areas.

As of 10:58 a.m. of Aug. 9, Pagasa Mactan issued a thunderstorm advisory of moderate to heavy rain showers with lightning and strong winds due to thunderstorms expected over the Cebu Province (Barili, Sibonga, Boljoon) and nearby areas within one to two hours.

The above conditions are being experienced in Cebu (Minglanilla, Carcar City) which may persist within one to two hours and may affect nearby areas. (MVE)
