Hofileña: Reiteration of historic heritage values in human life

THIS column coincides with two articles over the past several years reporting on notable events involving heritage values. The first item was the news report that Bacolod City Councilor Wilson Gamboa Jr. sponsored a proposal integrating the importance of heritage in local legislation. The other writer who also at this time reported in his column in a national Newspaper was F. Sionil Jose who wrote an interesting article connecting heritage with the topic of national security.

With our column space limitation, the two news reports cited have emphasized the values of heritage or legacies in the lives of people in the local or national communities.

With these brief reports, this column reiterates the overviews we have briefly discussed in our past issues concerning the values of basic concepts useful to many people, particularly various researchers, teachers and students, public and private institutions and other areas of communities. Thus we revisit here the main aspects of heritage or legacies including their integral relationships on different sectors of various countries.

Our reiteration therefore, of these various aspects of heritage includes basic definitions, especially human experiences of values of historic legacies for the present and future generations. We will also be including again the traditional concepts of heritage as classified in terms of tangible or intangible, movable or immovable, cultural or natural, communal or personal. We will likewise be highlighting the integral relationships of heritage issues in different countries with the current concerns of global inheritance. We will also further emphasize the importance of the values of legacies in relation to the various aspects of local or national development.

Following these basics of heritage, we also highlight the core values of legacies in relation to different generations and aspects with historical, architectural, aesthetic, social and spiritual legacies. Furthermore, we will also briefly reiterate the importance of the basic concepts of heritage awareness, appreciation, protection and developmental framework. We will likewise briefly relate here the operational or management aspects of heritage conservation, preservation, restoration, renovation and reconstruction. We will thus further highlight the notable heritage features of historical, socio-cultural importance, artistic uniqueness and other features that promote the welfare of the people. Lastly, we will be discussing the basic importance of tangible heritage or legacies for the welfare of the citizenry. We welcome related questions or suggestions on these issues.
