San Isidro town vice mayor found with cache of firearms, ammunition

AUTHORITIES arrested on Thursday, August 19, 2021, the vice mayor of San Isidro town in Leyte for alleged possession of undocumented firearms and ammunition.

The suspect, Isidro Castro Balmoria, was apprehended around 8:45 a.m. Thursday by virtue of a warrant issued by judge Manasseh Bastes of Regional Trial Court-Branch 11 in Calubian, Leyte.

Colonel Zacarias Noel Villegas, regional chief of Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), said the 57-year-old vice mayor yielded one caliber .45 Colt MK IV with serial number 254235, one unit of caliber 380 Llama with serial number 103975, two units of caliber 38 revolvers without serial numbers, one barrel for caliber .45, and suppressor.

Operatives from CIDG-Northern Leyte Provincial Field Unit, along with operatives, along with CIDG-Biliran, CIDG-Regional Field Unit-Eastern Visayas and San Isidro Municipal Police Station, also recovered assorted ammunition and several pieces of magazine assembly for caliber .45, M16, and 9-millimeter pistol, among others.

In a statement, Villegas encouraged the public to “continuously support” the police on its efforts in fighting criminality following the arrest of the local official.

The accused will be facing charges for violation of the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, officially recorded as Republic Act No. 10591. (SunStar Philippines)
