THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed the P46.5-million improvement of Dolores Port in Barangay 1, Dolores, Eastern Samar.

“The improvement in Dolores fish port will also provide better access to the nearby island destinations to locals and tourists. And will provide fast transportation or delivery of goods, services and marine products from the islands to the market,” said DPWH-Eastern Samar District Engineering Office head Engr. Ma. Margarita Junia.

The project includes the construction of flood control with a length of 101.44 meters, construction of Portland Cement Concrete Pavement (PCCP) with 116.50 meters length and five meters wide.

According to the DPWH official, the flood control structure “is also beneficial as it will protect the lives and properties of the residents living near the ocean especially during a storm surge.”

Meanwhile, the district engineering office announced the ongoing rehabilitation of roads with slips, slope collapse and landslide-prone areas along the national road in Barangay Libas, San Julian.

“I am very excited for this project. This is a long-term solution to the occurrence of landslides and rockfall along this road section especially during calamities. These projects once completed will provide road safety that will prevent road accidents in the area and will save lives and properties of the traveling public,” added Junia.

The engineering official said that in the rehabilitation works, they have already considered the offsetting of another 6.10 meters from the edge of the existing road to anticipate four-lane road improvement in the future.

“In times that there will be funds for road widening, there is no need to re-construct the slope protection since we already considered it in our design,” said Junia.

The rehabilitation of slope protection has four project contracts which includes the benching of the mountain slope and installation of slope protection rockfall netting along the 480 meters road section in Barangay Libas, with a total appropriation of P358.98 million, according to the district engineering office.

The four project contracts started in March 2021 and were expected to be completed at the end of the year, it added.

On December 14, 2017, both lanes in Barangay Libas road was covered by a 162.00 cu.m rockslide due to the excessive rain that happened during Typhoon Urduja.

Another landslide occurred on December 25, 2019, covering half-lane of the road with 200.00 cu.m rockslide during the strike of Typhoon Ursula

On November 22, 2020, a landslide was also recorded in Barangay Libas, due to an excessive rainfall that covered both lanes with 100.00 cu.m rockslide (limestone). (SunStar Philippines)
