IT has been proven time and again that Filipinos are among the elite boxers in the world. While much work lies ahead in determining why the Filipino people are successful in a sport like boxing, the fact is, a boxing workout routine grants one with fantastic health, fitness benefits.

With most people stuck at home because of the pandemic, perhaps it would be a great time to try out boxing at home?

So head online and do some online shopping. Here are the basic gear you need to get started:

Boxing Hand Wraps

Boxing gloves are the first thing people see when professional boxers trade punches in the ring but actually, it’s what’s inside that counts the most! We’re talking about hand wraps.

Hand wraps provide wrist protection for the one wearing them, and gives the knuckles a first layer of padding. While hand wraps do not increase punching power, the comfort you get allows you to punch out longer.

There are four types of hand wraps, each with their pros and cons: the disposable but accommodating tape and gauze; the affordable but needs-more-work traditional hand wraps; the breathable but thicker ‘Mexican style’ hand wraps; and the easy-to-use but non-traditional quick wraps.

Boxing Gloves

From a fashion perspective, one can enjoy picking out boxing gloves from a wide variety of colors out there in the market. The classics never die though: Red, White and Black. With boxing gloves, basically, there are three types:

There are the heavy bag gloves which are light but offer little protection; boxing training gloves which offer better protection with its molded thumb but could get worn out real quick; and the ones for competition, great quality but expensive and may be a little too much for home routines.

Punching Bag

Of all the items you need, this here’s the most challenging. It costs more. It’s pretty heavy. It’s a hassle to install. It takes up a considerable amount of space. However, a punching bag provides a good number of benefits when it comes to boxing workouts done at home.

When you go up against a punching bag—properly—your cardio fitness, muscle endurance, power and strength will all improve. In fact, your entire body will be moving, and you might be tempted to get in a few kicks in there as well.

Punch Mitts

In case you’re living with someone who also wants to get in on the action, purchase a pair of punch mitts. These are easy-to-use and you can work outdoors as a duo, taking turns who does the mitts. At least, you don’t have to be thinking of transferring the punching bag around. Training with punch mitts is also a great workout, and refines one’s boxing skills as the focus is on technique and aim.

Get healthy at home. Boxing workouts should give you that caloric burn and more!
