More than 200 workers affected by local supermarket chain closure

A TOTAL of 243 workers are affected with the closure of Cebu’s homegrown chain of supermarkets, Fooda Saversmart, in September 2021 due to financial losses, the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) 7 reported.

Luchel Senarlo-Taniza, Dole 7 Labor Information Officer III, said their agency confirmed the submission of a permanent closure report of Fooda Savers Mart Corp through the Dole’s Establishment Report System (ERS).

The permanent closure report was submitted on Monday, Aug. 23, 2021.

“The Department is ready to render assistance to affected workers. First off, we shall be doing profiling of affected workers to be able to determine the kind of intervention that we can extend,” Taniza said.

Through profiling, Dole 7 will get to know who needs assistance under the Dole 7’s livelihood and employment facilitation program with a referral to the Public Employment Service Office (Peso) if they want to work.

“There might be some of them who will need further training so we could also refer them to our partner-agencies like Technical Education and Skills Development Authority,” she said.

Fooda Saversmart, which announced on Thursday, August 26, 2021 the closing of all their branches in September, said it will hold a closing out sale with items at cost of below for all branches up to September 22 and until supplies last.

In a Facebook post, Fooda thanked the Cebuanos for their support for the past 19 years.

It has branches in General Maxilom Avenue, Cebu City; Barangays Guadalupe and Kasambagan, Cebu City; Linao, Talisay City; and Consolacion in northern Cebu. (JOB)
