Cebuana setter Deanna Wong has been named to the Philippine Women’s National Indoor Volleyball Team pool as it prepares to compete in the 2021 Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championship in October.

The 23-year old Wong, who is a product of Ateneo de Manila University and the University of San Jose-Recoletos, had a phenomenal stint in the Premier Volleyball League, finishing as the runner-up in the Best Setter race. She had a stellar average of 5.79 sets per frame while also producing a total of 136 digs through the semifinal round, which was good for fourth-best in the entire league.

Also called up to the national team pool were Wong’s Choco Mucho teammate, Kat Tolentino and Creamline’s Jema Galanza. Tolentino was the PVL’s Best Opposite Spiker award winner after averaging a remarkable 14.91 points per game. Galanza, on the other hand, produced a total of 103 points before the semifinals for the Cool Smashers.

The performances of the three players were enough to gain the attention of national team head coach Odjie Mamon and Brazilian consultant Jorge Edson Souza de Brito.

The national will send two squads to the aforementioned club championship, which kicks off on October 1 in Thailand. (JNP)
