TWO expectant mothers who earlier tested positive for Covid-19 delivered their babies in a Cebu City barangay isolation center (BIC) on Monday, Aug. 30, 2021.

Emergency Operations Center (EOC) deputy chief implementer and Cebu City Councilor Joel Garganera said one of the mothers was also hypertensive. She delivered a baby boy.

Garganera thanked the skilled BIC staff at the Cebu City Central School, including the midwife, for a job well done.

Garganera said City Central’s BIC houses 20 pregnant women and 17 mothers who had just given birth at the different hospitals and clinics but have tested positive for Covid.

Cebu City has logged a total of 2,945 active cases including 116 new infections.

Four new fatalities were also recorded, bringing the total number of Covid-related deaths for the month of August to 299.

A total of 245 new recoveries were logged.

“Our cases are going down, knock on wood, we hope they will continue to drop. Our daily positivity rate also decreased and we’re now below 3,000 active cases from 4,000 plus, but it’s too early to tell but we’re happy at EOC,” Garganera said in a mix of Cebuano and English.

Although five medical facilities were at critical level with an 85 percent bed occupancy rate (BOR), the BOR of 11 private hospitals and four public hospitals in Cebu City averaged 69 percent, the EOC said.

Aside from the five facilities at “critical level,” one was considered at high risk level with 70 to 85 percent BOR, four were moderate at 60 to 70 percent BOR, and five were considered safe at 60 percent BOR.

EOC records showed that 672 Covid beds were occupied on Tuesday and 302 beds were still available in various hospitals.

To date, Cebu City registered a total of 37,693 confirmed Covid-19 cases since the start of the pandemic in March 2020.

From Aug. 21 to 30, Barangay Guadalupe registered the highest number of cases at 214, followed by Lahug (123), Tisa (113), Talamban (107), and Apas (82).
