“Former US President Donald Trump derided Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell during a 50-minute speech at his Mar-a-Lago resort, Politico reported.
Trump referred to McConnell as a “dumb son of a b---h,” three people familiar with the remarks told Politico.
He then spent several minutes detailing his qualms with McConnell, the media outlet said.
The former president complained that McConnell had not done enough to defend him during his February impeachment trial, according to Politico.
The former president also falsely claimed that he had won the Senate election for McConnell in Kentucky, The Post added.
The Kentucky senator was not the only Republican to be derided. Trump also claimed that former Vice President Mike Pence lacked the “courage” to send the Electoral College certification back to state legislatures, MailOnline said.” (Joshua Zitser, Insider, April 21, 2021)
Thank God America, and the world is finally rid of the circus that is former US President Donald Trump. He was an insufferable little brat of a president, acting as if he owned the institutions of the United States, and treating co-equal branches of government like they were his private fiefdoms.
It’s tough to blame Trump alone though, for the contempt that he has shown to those in the Senate, the judiciary and just about everywhere else in the United States government. The problem was, just about everyone enabled, empowered and indulged him in his every wish, so much so that he thought he had everyone feeding off his hands.
This is nothing new with egotistical leaders, of course. Back then, even the Romans were guilty of treating their emperors like gods, that they actually thought they were, and started behaving like the whole world was at their beck and call. The Romans never learned, the Americans didn’t seem to either, and now the Filipino legislators are getting a taste of what it’s like to spoil a bully, only to have the bully punch them in the face.
I’m talking about the circus spectacle between the Senate and the President of the country.
Back when he came to power in 2016, it was as if he could do no wrong. When he cozied up to China against the advice of our allies and those with foreign policy and international law expertise, they did absolutely nothing. When he declared his war on drugs, they did not raise a finger to stop the alleged human rights violations that came with it. And when the Covid pandemic hit, they gave him blanket authority without any accountability to spend hundreds of billions of pesos for pandemic relief.
They not only silently acquiesced to his caprices, many of our lawmakers even went as far as to defend him and praise him for his actions, as if he was the only person who could save our country from certain doom.
Fast forward to 2021, and it is already too late to tame the bully they have created. Name calling, insults and profanity hurled at anyone who dares cross the President are only the symptoms of a much larger problem that they created, and are now belatedly having to deal with.
Back then, when they had the chance they could have put the President in his proper place. They could have helped to ensure that the tripartite checks and balances between the executive, the legislative and the judicial branches of government were respected and upheld. Instead, they turned a blind eye to the bully they had created. So it’s too late to complain now, when he has already punched them in the face, all the while laughing in glee while repeatedly doing so.
