THE Cebuano Studies Center (CSC) of the University of San Carlos (USC), in cooperation with the Mamugnaong Anak sa Dagang Inc. (MAD), Inotherwords Inc. (IOW) and the Literary and Cultural Studies Section of the USC Department of Communications, Linguistics and Literature, will conduct the activity entitled “Kumbira: A literary feast of Cebuano food” on Sept. 24-25, 2021.
This event will be held online via Zoom and is sponsored by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts Literary Committee.
The webinar aims to bring a fascinating portrait of the role of food in literature and life.
Project coordinator Lor Unabia-Viernes said the speakers will use their own observations, as well as a variety of research, experience and examples to weave a rich yarn of the impact food really has.
Explaining that food is tangled in every human emotion, the speakers will showcase how food is an expression of the Cebuano personality. Each module lecture/presentation will be followed by a writing session by the participants.
Food, like love, is a powerful conjurer of memories. The mention of a certain dish activates not only images in the brain, but opens a whole range of emotions and sensory memory. The mention of lechon or humba will not only make a Cebuano remember fiestas where the lechon takes center stage in the middle of the table surrounded with other festive fare.
The resource speakers for the two-day activity are Haidee Emmie Palapar, Clyde Inso Chan and Cindy Velasquez. The keynote lecture will be delivered by Dr. Hope Sabanpan-Yu.
