Storm damage exceeds P1B

OVER P1 billion worth of agricultural products were damaged due to the onslaught of storms Jolina (international name Conson) and Kiko (international name Chanthu), the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said.

In a report, the NDRRMC said a total of P1,059,263,154.84 worth of agriculture products were lost in Central Luzon, Bicol, Western Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Calabarzon and Mimaropa due to the effects of Jolina.

The storm, which rapidly intensified into a typhoon, also damaged P63,456,053 worth of infrastructure in these regions.

In Cagayan Valley and Central Luzon, a total of P18,259,993.43 worth of agriculture products were damaged due to Kiko.

The disaster bureau said a total of 323 houses were damaged by Kiko while 15,790 were damaged by Jolina.

The NDRRMC said 19 people were reported to have been killed due to Jolina. Three were confirmed while 16 were still being verified. Five were reported missing while 24 were injured.

Three persons were hurt due to the effects of Kiko.

The NDRRMC said a total of P1,773,201.20 worth of assistance were provided to the families affected by the two weather systems. (Third Anne Peralta-Malonzo / SunStar Philippines)
