THE Department of Health (DOH) Central Visayas logged 12 maternal Covid-19 deaths in the region from July 1 to September 15, 2021.

Dr. Eugenia Mercedes Cañal, head of the DOH-Central Visayas Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit, said most of these deaths involve expectant mothers who are already in the critical or severe case of Covid-19 infection.

“It’s not because nga dugay na refer, nga gikan sila sa usa ka lying in or center, but most of the time, ang ila g’yod is critical nga dili nila ma pull out ang mother from the complication of Covid,” she told members of Cebu media in a virtual press conference on Thursday, September 16, 2021.

She, however, did not give demographics of the mortalities.

Moreover, Cañal said they have swabbed, in the DOH regional swabbing center, a total of 328 pregnant women and of them, only 36 are positive.

Of the number, only five are active cases. She said these expectant mothers are usually in their third trimester since it is when they are required by their obstetrician/gynecologists, during their 35th week of age of gestation, when they are asked to be swabbed every two weeks as preparation for premature contraction or birth already.
