Azarcon fight KO’d by Covid-19

WORLD-RATED minimumweight Clyde Azarcon may have to wait a little bit longer for his ring return after his World Boxing Foundation (WBF) minimumweight title fight with Thembelani Okolo in South Africa was cancelled.

The fight won’t push through on Oct. 3, 2021 because of the current Covid-19 situation in South Africa.

“The fight is cancelled because of the rising cases of Covid-19 there,” Azarcon’s coach Christopher “Ping-Ping” Tepora told SunStar Cebu.

Azarcon and Okolo were originally scheduled to fight on June 27. The fight was then pushed back to Aug. 30, and then to Oct. 3 before it was completely cancelled.

Azarcon last saw action before the Covid-19 pandemic hit the Philippines in 2020. He walked away with a majority decision over Mike Kinaadman to win the WBF Inter-Continental minimumweight belt in a very entertaining fight in a Big Yellow Boxing Promotions event at the Robinsons Galleria Cebu on March 9, 2020.

Azarcon is currently rated No. 14 in the International Boxing Federation, wherein Rene Mark Cuarto is currently the minimumweight titleholder.

Azarcon is currently on a two-fight winning streak since suffering a first round knockout in the hands of 21-year-old Japanese sensation Genjiro Shigeoka in Japan in 2019. He has an impressive record of 17 wins, three defeats and a draw with six wins by way of knockout.

Azarcon will continue to train at the Big Yellow Boxing Gym, staying ready and waiting for an opportunity of getting a big fight. (EKA)
