CEBU City Mayor Edgardo Labella has filed another medical leave of absence from Sept. 20 to Oct. 3, 2021.

Sources said Labella will use the time to go to Metro Manila for a medical checkup so that he can fully recover from sepsis, which he suffered at the start of 2021.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines sepsis as the body’s extreme response to an infection.

“It is a life-threatening medical emergency. Sepsis happens when an infection you already have triggers a chain reaction throughout your body,” according to the CDC.

This is Labella’s seventh leave for the year 2021, according to SunStar’s count. He took his first medical leave when sepsis developed from an ear infection in January.

But it will be his first checkup for sepsis in Metro Manila as his four other medical leaves were spent on recuperating in Cebu.

“Please join me to wish our beloved mayor, Atty. Edgardo Labella, to be better as he gives attention to his medical concern in the next two weeks,” said Vice Mayor Michael Rama who will take over the reins for 14 days in Labella’s absence.

Councilor Donaldo “Dondon” Hontiveros will be acting vice mayor.

Rama said he will focus on strengthening the City’s Covid-19 vaccination drive in the coming days.

“I call on our citizens who have not been vaccinated, again register now through Pabakunata.com and wait for your text advice from Cebu City Vax for your turn to be innoculated. Choose no brand unless you pay for it elsewhere,” said Rama.

The acting mayor noted that with Christmas just around the corner, through vaccination, Cebuanos can celebrate Christmas and greet the new year 2022 in good health with their families.
