Zamboanga City logs 12 new Delta variant cases

THE local health office said that 12 new cases of the more contagious Delta variant of Sars-CoV-2, the virus that causes the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), were recorded in Zamboanga City.

Dr. Dulce Amor Miravite, city health officer, said the recently confirmed detection brought to 19 the Delta variant cases recorded in the city as of September 18.

"All of the identified (12 new) cases have recovered," Miravite said.

Miravite said the new batch of Delta variant cases were part of the 21 samples the City Health Office sent to the Philippine Genome Center, through the Department of Health regional office on August 24 for genome sequencing.

The profiles of the 12 new cases include 49 years old unvaccinated male of Sinunuc village with no travel history but close contact of patient ZC12154 and a diabetic with maintenance medicine.

Patient ZC12154 is 43 years old female from Sinunuc and was a close contact of Delta variant patient ZC12097 whose result was made known in August.

The second case is a 19-year-old unvaccinated female, also from Sinunuc, with no travel history but was a close contact of patient ZC12154.

The third is a partially vaccinated 38-year-old male from Santa Maria village with no travel history and diabetic with maintenance medicine.

Eleventh is a 59-year-old fully vaccinated male from Tumaga with no travel history and with five family members positive for the virus.

Twelfth is a fully vaccinated 50-year-old male from Calarian village with travel history and was a work place close contact of patient ZC12221. Three of his family members were also positive for coronavirus.

Patient ZC12221 was a male who died sometime in July due to severe symptoms of Covid-19.

Miravite strongly advised the public to secure themselves by observing maximum health standards.

"Never let our guards down in the fight against Covid-19," she added.

She said they must avoid the three Cs-closed spaces, crowded places and close-contact settings such as close-range conversation. (SunStar Zamboanga)
