Sanchez: Politics

THE Ber months augur the start of the Christmas season in the Philippines. But it is also the season of the electoral campaign. Nationwide, it's a family feud. In Negros Occidental, it's a forgone conclusion that it will be the incumbent Governor Eugenio Jose “Bong” Lacson.

There is no one who will contest the governorship. In Bacolod, it will be a toss-up between incumbent Mayor Evelio “Bing” Leonardia and Alfredo Abelardo “Albee” Benítez, a Filipino-American entrepreneur.

It's more complicated at the national level. Tangling the presidency are Yorme (Mayor) Francisco “Isko” Moreno. Then there's Panfilo “Ping” Lacson, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Manuel “Manny” Pacquiao, possibly María Leonor “Leni” Robredo and Sara Duterte-Carpio.

Let's see what will happen from October 1 to 8 and what will happen when the candidates file their certificates of candidacy.

It’s interesting that Davao Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio refused to accept the Sinovac vaccine with a six month shelf life. Unlike her Dad Rodrigo Roa Duterte, the president of the Philippines who prefers the Chinese-made vaccine. Most Davaoeños prefer the American brands Pfizer and Moderna. After a review of science-based literature, I decided to get jabbed with the AstraZeneca Oxford vaccine at the SMX, SM Bacolod.

Senator Richard Gordon rebuked the president during the Blue Ribbon Committee hearing at the Philippine Senate. Erstwhile ally Senator Gordon dared President Duterte to give it his best. The Duterte alliance is unraveling. More exposé on corruption will resume on Friday. As Tagalog comics would write to maintain suspense, Abangan (to be continued).
