THE International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is implementing some P2.2 million projects at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)-administered Zamboanga City Jail (ZCJ) to alleviate the plight of the persons deprived of liberty (PDL).
Senior Jail Officer 2 Rey Laurence Comprendio, ZCJ information officer, said the projects include improvement of water supply, ventilation and perimeter lighting, which are to be completed in 60 calendar days starting this week.
“These projects will alleviate the plight of the PDLs,” Comprendio said.
Comprendio said the water supply improvement project includes the installation of motor pump, donation of plumbing tools, and fixing of pipelines.
Once completed, Comprendio said PDLs on the second floor of the jail facility will no longer need to fetch water from the ground floor.
The improvement of ventilation includes the installation of blowers and exhaust fans while the perimeter lighting covers the fixing of electrical wirings inside the jail facility, upgrading of perimeter light to solar power lights and repair of the standby generator.
“It will be a big help especially in our problem of ventilation and congestion,” Comprendio said.
He said the ZCJ currently has population of 2,927 PDLs. (SunStar Zamboanga)
